Things Finding Their Way Back
Some of today's best news is about return. Herring are swimming back up northeastern streams now that small, obsolete dams are coming out. A family of barn owls has nested on Manhattan's Upper West Side, the first documented nesting on the island in modern history. In Milwaukee, the Brewers are going back to the World Series for the first time since 1982.
Some of that is luck, and some is work. Someone took out the dams. Someone built an overpass over Interstate 25 in Colorado, and collisions between animals and vehicles there fell by 91 percent. Repair tends to look like that: a specific fix, then a number.
The science section is worth a slow read today. Researchers have identified three brain pathways tied to lasting relief from treatment-resistant depression. A soy-derived compound protected mice from harms of a high-salt diet, though that work is early and in animals only.
And Helga Duffy, 99, is now the world's oldest wing-walker, according to Guinness World Records.
Have a quiet Sunday.
